Floating solar power plant | an invention which could change the world

 Floating solar power plant

These days there is a very heavy use of non-renewable fuels which is causing pollution and also reducing the amount of them present in nature which causes an increase in their price. So to stop all this problem we could choose to use renewable resources like solar energy, wind energy and hydrological energy which do not produce any kind of pollution during production of energy. And many countries have started to use these energy and in this post we are going to discuss about the South Korean floating solar power plant.

South Korean solar power plant

It has South Korea has created a solar power plant floating on water with a shape of a lotus. It has total of 92,000 solar panels floating in water. This floating in water idea solar power plant saves a lot of land from getting wasted. They have created 17 such giant solar power plants in south Korea for production of electricity. Placed in a 12 mile long reservoir. The plant can produce 41 megawatts of electricity. This much electricity can power  20,000 homes. The solar plant does not occupy any land due to which people there have no problem with it. and it is the largest solar plant in south korea.

Location

The lotus solar panel farm is located in Asia’s country south korea’s county of Hapcheon. The lotus solar power plant is present on a 12 mile long reservoir of the Hapcheon dam, In the south gyeongsang provision. The city has an area of 983.42 km2  and has a population of 60,160 people

Constructor and power

The solar plant was created by the Korean Water Resources Corporation. It is a government agency which handles all water resources responsibilities. The president of South Korea Moon-jae said that the floating solar plants could help the country to become carbon neutral by 2050 and produce energy of 9900 megawatts. The solar plant has the power to produce energy of 41 megawatts with its 92,000 solar panels. This much energy can power 20,000 houses in South korea.

What is the Need ?

These days there is a very heavy use of natural resources like petrol, diesel, coal due to which these exhaustible resources are on their end. But to save these natural resources we should use renewable resources like wind energy, solar energy, hydrological energy. In the world there is wide use of windmills, solar panels, and water turbines to produce electricity. South Korea is a country whose economy is largely dependent on non-renewable resources. Thus they want to shift to renewable resources which won’t produce any kind pollution and harm our environment so they have created the floating solar power plant. They also build it in shape of lotus so that it could become tourist attraction which could help the country.

Why solar energy ?

Solar energy was chosen by South Korea as it is the most widely available energy in the world which could be produced from any part of earth. For production of solar energy, South Korea chose to make floating solar plants on water so that no land should get wasted. South Korea lies between temperate zones and has warm summers and dry winters which help solar panels for production of solar power.

Why on water reservoirs ?

The decision of building a solar power plant on water is a game changing decision as this idea could be used in various countries with low availability of land. This idea could be even more efficient because it is built in a water reservoir where there is no wastage of land and thus the public won’t have any opposition with it. And the water on which it is floating only offers a cooling system to the solar plant in hot climates.

Disadvantages of floating solar plants ?

Along with many advantages of floating solar plants there are few disadvantages too. The floating solar plant is costly to build due to floaters and the extra water resistant parts used in the solar plant. And the solar plant also takes large space over the water which reduces the amount of oxygen dissolving in water and causes death of aquatic life. And due to less light reaching inside the water less photosynthesis will take place beneath the water causing the death of many aquatic plants and disturbing the water ecosystem. And it will also cause a rise in temperature of water which could cause algae blooms inside the water which could cause various problems to aquatic life.

Further projects

Looking towards the future, South Korea has planned to build 3 more mega projects. First project is a 72 megawatts project on the Saemangeum sea. Another project is to build a plant producing energy of 300 megawatts and one of the biggest projects is to build a plant producing energy of 2.1 Gigawatts which is planned to build on the coast of the Yellow Sea which is planned for 2030.

Production of energy in Asia

Asia is a large producer of electricity among the world. Asia is producing 517 gigawatts of solar energy in a year. The largest producer of solar energy in the world is China, located in Asia, producing 30.1 Gigawatts. And the world’s largest solar plant is present in our country India. The name of the world 's largest solar plant is Bhadla solar plant. It is present in Rajasthan and covers an area of 14,000 acres and has a total 1 core solar panels and produces 2245 megawatts of energy and India is also planning to build a large 600 megawatts floating solar plant on Omkareshwar dam. There are many other countries producing solar energy from Asia like Singapore has a 60 megawatts solar plant on a mountain peak and the world 's largest hydro floating solar hybrid plant is present in Thailand an asian country.
